The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has published its updated comprehensive "Practice Guideline for the Prevention and Treatment of Delirium." The new guideline, which is designed for any clinician who may encounter patients with delirium, includes evidence-based recommendations to improve its detection, prevention, and treatment. A Harris poll, which surveyed both healthcare employees and employers found that 8 in 10 healthcare workers (84%) feel that they are taken for granted. Over half (55%) admit that they’ll look for job openings, interview for, or switch to a new role in the next year. However, 63% of healthcare employees agree that they’d be more likely to stay with their employer if tuition support were provided. Full story
Cannabis products containing high concentrations of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in marijuana, were linked to psychosis, schizophrenia, and addiction, a systematic review found. Across 99 studies examining the effects of high-concentration THC products on mental health outcomes, 70% of the nontherapeutic studies (i.e., those not attempting to treat a medical condition or symptom) showed an unfavorable association with psychosis or schizophrenia and 75% found a relationship to cannabis use disorder (CUD), reported Medscape.com. Individuals who received medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) while incarcerated were significantly more likely to continue treatment six months after release than those who did not receive MOUD, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health. Full story
Globally, about 14% of those ages 10-19 live with a mental health condition, making up 15% of the disease burden in this age group, according to a World Health Organization report. Read the report

Legislative & Policy
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Sept. 22 started the approval of leucovorin calcium tablets for patients with cerebral folate deficiency. On the same date, the FDA initiated the process to change the label for acetaminophen "to reflect evidence suggesting that the use of acetaminophen by pregnant women may be associated with an increased risk of neurological conditions... in children."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will hold an advisory panel meeting in November to examine the fast-emerging class of AI-enabled digital mental health devices, reported Reuters. The agency's Digital Health Advisory Committee will examine how digital tools could help and the risks they pose. Full story

This year, more than a dozen states have passed laws regulating AI in healthcare, reported Stateline.org. Nevada and Oregon prohibit AI from representing itself as a healthcare provider, while other states have regulated the use of AI-enabled chatbots in mental health. Full story
